I’ve been privy to some crazy scenarios of bad management 🙄, and on the contrary, fantastic ones 👍 , so naturally, I've been thinking about what differentiates good managers from bad ones.
I've cut it down to these 4 key elements:
Empathy & Support: Great managers aren’t dictators. They take the time to understand their team’s needs and create a space where everyone feels heard and supported. It’s about building trust, not control.
Winning Together: Good managers know that success isn’t about them — it’s about the team. When the team wins, they win. They focus on developing the team’s potential and celebrating the collective success.
Guidance & Trust: A great manager doesn’t micromanage. They give their team the freedom to own their work, while offering guidance when needed (and making sure that their team knows that they can be approached at any time). They trust their people to rise to the occasion.
Adaptability & Growth: Good managers know that things change and so should they. They’re constantly learning, adapting, and finding new ways to help their team succeed. They embrace feedback and lead by example.
Great leadership is all about helping others grow, fostering collaboration, and building a culture of trust. A great manager isn’t just a boss - they’re a mentor and a coach who invests in their team’s success.
